Ability to push a job back to a particular approver without declining the whole action

We want to use the Position Description workflow to facilitate and document the process of changing a job description. This could be in advance of recruiting, or as a method to request a reclassification of an existing position.

The specific situation is when a hiring manager wants to propose a change to the Position Description. There is an approval process, let’s say there are three approvers.

  1. Originator (Manager): Opens the PD, chooses “Update” and makes revisions, and selects an approval process. We’ll call them Approver 1, Approver 2 and Approver 3.

  2. The Originator hits “Save” which sends the action to Approver 1.

  3. Approver 1 chooses “Approve” and sends the action to Approver 2.

  4. Approver 2 reviews the proposed changes, and notices that the Originator did not include a certain set of duties.

  5. Approver 2 calls the Approve 1, they discuss the changes. They agree to all of the changes, and Approver 1 says “send it back to me and I will add the missing duties”

How does Approver 2 send the action back to Approver 1 or the originator?

(It seems as though Approvers can only “decline” the whole action , not send it back to a particular party in the process. The decline action sends it back to the beginning, and means that all of the work that was OK needs to be redone in addition to the work that needs to be changed. I’m hoping I’m wrong!)

What business value are you trying to achieve?

Efficiency and documentation for the process of modifying the position description. Without the ability to make changes within the workflow, all of the work and decision making must take place outside of the system, which defeats the purpose of automation.
